Hey...I'd finally get to play Half-life 2! w00t!
Personal xbox faves of mine are:
- Halo 1 (not 2)
- Morrowind: GOTY Edition (awesome value for money here)
- Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (mummy!)
- Fahrenheit (short n sweet, with a good 'vibe' to it)
What gives my xbox the most value, however, is modding it, sticking a massive HDD in there and running XBMC to watch movies/music/pictures.
I'm not sure how the "dead" proclamation, if true, makes the Xbox politically/socailly less despicable than it would have been before. Two reasons Matt's attitude is troubling off the top of my head: Even buying everything used still helps buoy the brand's worth. Secondly, as long as Xbox 2 is bkwds compat on any level, MS continues to support the platform you'd be supporting, which is obviously what you've been hoping to avoid.
We've got a long time before even the original Xbox is far enough out of MS's sights that Linux-zealots can consider it a non-evil. Any decision to the contrary is simply irrational to the point of logical (redundancy by design ;^D) indefensibility.
Just off the top of my head:
Psychonauts (Tim Schaffer! Fun premise! Funny story!)
Shenmue 2 (More adventure game than fighting game)
Galleon (What the guy that made Tomb Raider eventually did after he got sick of Tomb Raider)
Those are all worth looking into. Especially Galleon.
If you're a fan of Team Ninja and were vexed you never had a chance to play the latest Dead or Alive games, I would go that route. DOA3, DOA Ultimate (which is just a slight update to DOA2, plus DOA1, plus online play) and Ninja Gaiden Black. All are quality, if you care for that sort of thing.
I've also had fun with Jade Empire.
Don't bother with XBox Live. And if you don't want to mess with a mod chip, I highly suggest doing an easy soft mod and running XBMC as earlier poster suggested.
-Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind GOTY
-Knights of the Old Republic
-Splinter Cell 1-3, don't compare the PS2 versions
-Chronicles of Riddick
-Shenmue 2 if you didn't have the DC version
-KOTOR2, its no KOTOR, but if you like the first...
-Jade Empire, Bioware attempting not to pay license fees to D&D or Lucas. Decent.
-Ninja Gaiden Black, brutally old school
